Back in the Middle Ages, stained glass windows were made by chipping colored glass to shape with a hammer and holding the pieces together with strips of lead. While some still use this method today, most stained glass is made by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s ten-step method using thin copper foil.
It all starts with an idea. |

From that idea, we develop a pattern, traditionally known as a cartoon. |
The pattern is used to cut pieces of colored and textured glass to the proper size and shape. |
The individual pieces of glass are wrapped in thin copper foil. |
The pieces of glass are attached together by melting solder, a mixture of lead and tin. |
After passing through several more steps of cleaning and finishing, the result is a finished piece of art! |
